In class, we are shifting toward digital circuits using Max and Arduino software (along with a physical Arduino board) as well as a DMX system to control light bulbs. I am excited with the possibilities afforded by these new tools. When I was working on my first project, I was limited by the variability in the photoresistors, and if I were to use the new programs to enhance that project, I could make it more accurately playable, similar to a piano. In my use of the Max software so far, my group was able to get the lights flickering at random intensities at various frequencies that we could select. There are many more functions that I look forward to discovering.
This week’s art viewings had some very aesthetic pieces, which I enjoyed. I thought Regine Schumann’s colorful, often angular light compositions were beautiful. They remind me of the beauty of a gradient sunset. I also really enjoyed Music For Lamps. The sounds were satisfying and the whole piece felt very tangible and relatable. I feel like I have played music for lamps with my own light fixtures at some point.
